Water Quality Conditions in Steamboat Creek, Washoe County, NV, with particular emphasis on NPS Loading of N, P, and selected Metals

While there is a currently established and comprehensive water quality monitoring program on the lower portion of the Truckee River downstream of Reno, and nutrient load entering the river from the Reno-Sparks Wastewater Treatment Facility (RSWTF) is well documented, very little is known about the magnitude and importance of nonpoint source (NPS) nutrients from the urban-agricultural watershed south of Reno. Indeed, in many systems, nonpoint source pollution to receiving bodies exceeds point source discharge. In response to this, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, in cooperation with the Washoe County Department of Comprehensive Planning has been conducting an extensive water quality monitoring program on Steamboat Creek and its major tributaries in order to (1) determine the relative magnitude of this creek with regard to nitrogen and phosphorus loading to the Truckee River and (2) determine its contribution of metals and its effect on downstream water quality.

Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Nonpoint Source Assessment and Management Plan 2011 (public review draft)

This assessment and management plan provides an updated assessment of nonpoint source pollution concerns for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe.  The 2011 update builds upon the research and results compiled for the 1994 Plan. In addition, the revision will reevaluate the concerns and provide an updated ranking of priority NPS issues. For each of these NPS concerns, possible treatment options are suggested.  The updated plan will serve as a tool in the Tribe’s efforts to protect water quality and associated designated beneficial uses on reservation waters.

This edition is a public review draft.  Please submit comments via the contibutor contact information, or our website.  Comment period is open from 11/23/2011 to 12/23/2011.

TMWRF River monitoring grab samples

Grab samples are currently taken at various locations on the Truckee River mainstem and tributaries including North Truckee Drain and Steamboat Creek.  River sample locations are: East McCarran Bridge, Lockwood, Tracy/Old Clark Bridge, Derby Dam and Painted Rock.  As of May 2012  parameters have been reduced and Wadsworth and Nixson sites are no longer being monitored by TMWRF.

Specific Locations include the following:
#3 at East McCarren bridge, grabs taken on the downstream side of bridge. 39 deg/ 31'02" x 119 deg 44'23"
#4 Below Lockwood at the old bridge for grab samples, taken downstream of bridge. 39 deg/ 30'33" x 119 deg 38'58"
#5 Old Clark bridge at USA Parkway, grabs taken on the downstream side of bridge. 39 deg. 33'80" x 119 deg 29'29"

Date Range: 1985 - 03/2014.
