Residents at Reno's old landfill site have petitioned the federal Environmental Protection Agency to require further water and ground testing to block further development of the property.
The Reno City Council in August approved a plan to build eight three-story apartment buildings on the now-vacant land northwest of Sutro Street and McCarran Boulevard.
Neighbors in Sun Villa Estates, built on part of the landfill site, aren't convinced the location is either stable for building or safe from underground toxins buried in the decades before Reno had a residential trash collection system or a sanitary landfill.
