At first glance, the aqua blue tricycle looks like a sidewalk cruiser for seniors, but this deceptively simple bike can potentially deliver safe drinking water to millions of needy people around the world.

Built by five Silicon Valley designers, the Aquaduct took first prize Wednesday in the first Innovate or Die competition, which invited pedal-powered ideas that benefit humanity and the environment. Google, Specialized Bicycles of Morgan Hill and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners sponsored the contest.

"Wow!" said Mike Sinyard, founder and president of Specialized Bicycles. "This is an idea that could have a huge impact."

Sinyard and two other judges from the sponsoring companies chose Aquaduct unanimously from more than 100 entries worldwide.
