DRI is a unique blending of academia and entrepreneurship. From our desert home in Nevada, DRI employs more than 500 faculty, support staff, and students who are engaged in a research enterprise generating approximately $45 million in total annual revenue. At any give time, DRI is engaged in about 300 scientific research projects from our main research campuses in Las Vegas (Southern Nevada Science Park) and Reno (Dandini Research Park), with subsidiary campuses in Boulder City, Nevada and Steamboat Springs, Colorado. DRI's environmental research programs are directed from three core divisions (Atmospheric Sciences, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, and Hydrologic Sciences) and four interdisciplinary centers (Center for Advanced Visualization, Computation and Modelling, the Center for Arid Lands Environmental Management, the Center for Watersheds and Environmental Sustainability and the Frank H. Rogers Center for Environmental Remediation and Monitoring). Grounded in fundamental research, we provide our sponsors and clients with innovative solutions to pressing environmental problems as we balance the need to develop resources while protecting and sustaining the environment. For the people of Nevada, our commitment is the application of our scientific understanding to the effective management of all the State's natural resources while meeting needs for economic diversification and science-based educational opportunities.

Nevada Biodiversity Initiative

The primary purpose of the Nevada Biodiversity Initiative (NBI) is to conserve the rich and diverse biological resources in the state. These resources include functional, healthy, and sustainable natural ecosystems, a full complement of native species, and sufficient genetic variation within these species to allow them to persist and evolve. We believe these goals can be accomplished in conjunction with human societal needs.

Nevada Heritage Program

The Nevada Natural Heritage Program systematically collects information on Nevada's at-risk biological features. Staff biologists and data management specialists consolidate natural resource information from diverse sources such as field surveys, museum collections, resource management agencies, published and unpublished reports, and knowledgeable individuals. They research and record facts: the existence, locations, numbers, condition, biology, and habitats of species and biological communities. This comprehensive inventory is maintained in an easily accessible system of computer databases, topographic maps, and manual files, and is continually updated, refined, and subjected to quality controls. Program information becomes more complete each year, and also continues changing to reflect current conditions on the landscape.

Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe is governed by 10 Tribal Council members who are elected bi-annually in December and on staggered two year terms. The tribe operates under the Indian Reorganization Act Constitution and By-Laws approved on January 26, 1936 by the Department of Interior.

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe has a Government to Government Relationship with the Federal Government. Therefore, the Tribe contracts with or receives grants directly from Federal Agencies or the State of Nevada, to provide services to the Tribal members and residents of the Reservation. The revenue generated by the Tribe is used to support local Tribal government activities and to supplement the programs that provide direct services to the Tribal members or residents.

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribes' Reservation is located thirty five miles northeast of Reno, Nevada in a remote desert area located in the counties of Washoe, Lyon, and Storey. The area of the reservation contains 475,000 acres or 742.2 square miles. Out of this acreage approximately 112,000 acres cover the surface of a terminal desert lake, Pyramid Lake. Pyramid Lake is one of the most valuable assets of the Tribe and is entirely enclosed within the boundaries of the Reservation. Pyramid Lake is approximately 15 miles long and 11 miles wide. Pyramid Lake measures 350 feet at its deepest point.

Tahoe-Truckee Sanitation Agency

The Tahoe-Truckee Sanitation Agency, or TTSA, is committed to a policy of energy and natural resource conservation. Our goal is to discharge the treated wastewater in the Truckee River Corridor in such a manner as to retain the integrity of ground and surface waters, while ensuring the quantity of water downstream is not diminished.

The Agency is committed to policy of conservation and recycle. A few examples are cited:
-The biological removal process substantially reduces chemical demands, energy, and landfill stresses.
-Anaerobic sludge digestion results in methane gas. This fuels boilers to provide building and process heat.
-Combustion offgases, principally carbon dioxide, is an integral component in pH control.

The TTSA is made up of five entities: Tahoe City PUD (530) 583-3796; North Tahoe PUD (530) 546-4212; Squaw Valley Public Service District (530) 583-4692; Alpine Springs County Water (530) 583-2342; Truckee Sanitary District (530) 587-3804.

Treated effluent is piped out through a soil aquifer treatment system through a series of laterals where physical, chemical and microbial activity improve water quality further. This large discharge field contains monitoring wells, which are monitored regularly. Effluent is retained within the system for a minimum of 50 days, then the aquifer emerges to the Truckee River or Martis Creek through seepage.

The Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility (TMWRF) is located to the east of the Truckee Meadows, and provides water treatment services for the cities of Reno and Sparks, NV. This facility is located east of the two cities, and wastewater is treated at TMWRF, with effluent discharged into the river and heads east toward Pyramid Lake. TMWRF collects data all along the Truckee River using SONDE sensors that collect a number of water quality parameters, including water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance.
